WHAT’S IN A LOGO? WE BREAK DOWN OUR ACCREDITATIONS

As a society, we’ve become utterly obsessed with what goes in our food, how it’s made and whether it’s organically sourced – let’s be honest, we all know a label literate nutritional novice who likes to impart their wisdom about what we’re about to eat.

So, why are our skincare labels shrouded in so much mystery? In a study by Label Insights, when buying personal care products, 79 per cent of women said they’re at least sometimes confused about the package labelling.

You may have noticed that our product packaging (and that of most of your skincare favourites) is loaded with logos, each representing an ethical accreditation. You may be forgiven, however, for feeling a little overwhelmed by what they all really mean, as some may be confusing to distinguish from one another.

So, we’re here to help you get to grips with our Tropic trophy cabinet and enable you to understand each element of our ethical accreditations as we endeavour to be a brand with a small footprint, but a big heart.

Protect Land + Sea

What Does The Protect Land + Sea Certification Show Us?

If a product wears the Protect Land + Sea Certification seal, consumers and businesses can rest assured that it doesn’t contain ingredients that may be harmful environmental pollutants. Tropic is actually the first beauty brand in the UK and Europe to receive this certification, which we couldn’t be more proud of!

How Does The Protect Land + Sea Certification Help Our Environment?

It informs the general public about marine pollution, especially from seemingly innocuous sources like personal care products such as sunscreen and lotion, property maintenance products (washing your car for instance), clothing, and plastic packaging.

Vegan

What Does The Vegan Logo Show?

This product and its ingredients don’t contain any animal product, by-product or derivative and must not involve testing of any sort on animals by the manufacturers or on their behalf by any third parties.

Why Are Vegan Products Good For The Planet?

According to a 2010 report by the United Nations Environment Programme, animal products are a key cause of environmental problems including climate change, water depletion and soil erosion, so if you’re trying to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle, choosing vegan products may be the way to go!

Leaping Bunny

What Is The Leaping Bunny Certification?

It signifies that a company and its ingredient suppliers don’t conduct or commission animal testing using their products.

What Is Animal Testing?

An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm.

Cruelty Free & Vegan

What Does The Cruelty Free & Vegan Logo Show?

This logo shows that a company and its ingredient suppliers don’t conduct, commission, or pay for any tests on animals for ingredients, formulations, or finished products and don’t contain any animal ingredients.

Are Cruelty Free And Vegan The Same Thing?

It's common to find animal derived components like lanolin (wool wax) or shellac (a resin from the female lac bug) in toiletries and makeup, but vegan products will exclude all of these. If a product is cruelty free, neither the product nor the ingredients or components have been tested on animals.

The Ethical Company

What Is The Ethical Company Certification?

It’s the UK’s only cross-spectrum (people, animals and environment) ethical accreditation, which exists to reward ethical companies’ behaviour.

What Are The Ethical Company Searching Business Records For?

  • Environment: environmental reporting; pollution; nuclear power; other environmental issues.
  • Animals: animal testing; factory farming; other animal rights.
  • People: oppressive regimes; worker’s rights; irresponsible marketing; armaments.
  • Extras: genetic engineering; boycott call; political activity; alerts.

Carbon Neutral

What Is The CarbonNeutral® Badge?

The CarbonNeutral® Protocol gives businesses a rigorous and transparent framework to deliver carbon neutrality for their business, products and/or activities.

What Steps Does Tropic Take To Be CarbonNeutral®?

We actually double offset our carbon, meaning that through international environmental initiatives, we offset twice as much carbon as we emit.

Since becoming CarbonNeutral®, we’ve been able to offset the equivalent of over 4,000 football pitches worth of forest growing for an entire year. We’ve also delivered over £2.1 million worth of value in total so far to households, infrastructure and biodiversity through CarbonNeutral® schemes.
