Tropic does more than simply celebrate World Reef Day – we actively contribute to the restoration of coral reefs. Read on to find out how!
Celebrate World Reef Day on June 1st
The fourth annual World Reef Day on June 1st, 2022, marks the start of World Oceans Month, and invites us all to think about the beauty and fragility of our ocean’s coral reefs. It’s a call to action for everyone to create change through education and engagement, and at Tropic we’re proud to play our part.
How Tropic supports the world’s reefs
The beautiful, natural wonder of the Great Barrier Reef is close to Tropic Founder Susie’s heart. With Cairns, Australia, as her childhood home and an insatiable love for scuba diving, Susie wanted to give something back to the reefs. So, she decided to support the work of the Reef Restoration Foundation in Cairns, helping to create climate change-resistant ocean-based coral nurseries to regenerate the Great Barrier Reef.
In 2021, we launched our Ocean Dive Pore-clearing Serum, with 10% of profits from this product being donated to the Reef Restoration Foundation. According to the University of Hawaii, Manoa, it’s predicted that around 70-90% of the world’s existing reefs will disappear in the next two decades. So, it’s never been more critical to invest in the future of our majestic reefs, and you can help with every purchase of Ocean Dive.
Deeper into Ocean Dive
With nourishing ingredients hailing from the sea, it made sense to reinvest profits from this superstar product back into the ocean. Exfoliating marine fulvic acid encourages cell renewal, brightening your complexion with a host of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while ocean-born blue algae protects skin from pollution and free radical damage.
Working alongside these marine-based marvels are hardworking 2% lactic and 2% salicylic acids, improving skin tone and dissolving debris within pores. The formula may be potent, but Ocean Dive has been specially developed for use on areas of oiliness or blemished skin, without causing dryness or irritation. Simply dive into the serum using the additional Bamboo Buds and apply the formula to specific patches of skin.
What does Reef Restoration Foundation do?
In 2016 and 2017, there were two unprecedented back-to-back bleaching events, which affected two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef. Bear in mind that this reef is over 2,300km in length, so two-thirds of this is a huge amount of coral! The Reef Restoration Foundation works to regenerate damaged reefs by establishing new coral nurseries, protecting all the wildlife that depends on the unique habitat for survival.
The restoration process involves experienced members of the Reef Restoration Foundation taking small cuttings from healthy corals that survived the 2016 and 2017 bleaching events. Having survived, these corals should be naturally more resilient to coral bleaching and high water temperatures. The corals are cut into mother colonies, which are then attached to frames in an ocean-based nursery adjacent to a damaged reef. After six to twelve months of growth, the corals are attached to a reef to regenerate damaged sections.
Amazing, right? When you buy Ocean Dive, you’re helping this process of restoration, ensuring the future of the world’s largest living organism: the Great Barrier Reef. Remember this every time you dive into your serum and feel a wave of joy at the knowledge that you’re preserving this wonder of the world for future generations.
