Funding Education: Opening our third school in Madagascar

So far in 2022, we've funded a year's worth of education for over 6,500 children across the globe, unlocking the potential of young people in the world’s most remote areas.

What better way to mark three incredible years partnering with United World Schools (UWS) than by opening our third school with them?

Located in Madagascar, in a southwestern village called Ampandrivotse (pronounced Am-Pam-Chee-Voe-Chey), our new school is providing 200 children with formal education for the very first time. 

This is all thanks to our ‘10% For The World’ initiative. As part of our mission to make the world a healthier, greener, more empowered place, we've pledged that 10% of all profits will go to charities and good causes. Through our partnership with UWS, we're funding highly qualified teachers, safe school buildings, libraries bursting with books, clean water, and more. 

But none of this would be possible without the support of our customers, as every collective £50 spent with us funds an entire day of school for a child.

 

The partnership to date 

Since our partnership with UWS was first established in 2019, we've raised enough money to provide more than six million school days to over 12,000 children worldwide. Funds we've raised have primarily benefitted students in UWS’ already existing schools, but following the opening of our first school in Cambodia in February 2020, we've been determined to open more learning hubs around the globe. The goal? To create opportunities for children who’d otherwise be denied access to education, and therefore the basic right to learn and opportunity to prepare for employment outside their immediate locale. 

2022 so far 

It’s been a big year for the Tropic x UWS partnership. In April 2022, we opened a school in the village of Madamsingh in eastern Nepal – a country with one of the world’s lowest literacy rates, where more than 25% of women aren’t educated (UNESCO). Just last month, we opened the first UWS school to exist in Madagascar. We turned our attention to this area of the world because a staggering 75% of the population live below the poverty line, and only 40% of children finish primary education (UWS). Together with UWS, we decided on Ampandrivotse as the school site because of its remote, coastal nature. This makes it especially difficult for NGOs to access, meaning basic infrastructure is often unattainable, and providing teaching is significantly more difficult than it is in the rest of the country. 

Every child has the right to education: to be able to read, write, and choose their own path in life. Those living in marginalised communities are no different. In unison with UWS, we’re giving young people the opportunity to create their own brighter, more secure futures – and we’ve only just begun.
