International Women's Day: how to feel empowered

In the spirit of uplifting and inspiring each other on this International Women’s Day, we asked the wonderful women in the wider Tropic community what makes them feel most empowered. Let's glow girls!

Empowering women is at the heart of our Infinite Purpose. From ensuring that each Tropic purchase funds girls’ education in remote corners of the globe to creating effective beauty products that help our customers and Ambassadors feel their absolute best. Because nothing is better than feeling powerful, healthy, and ready to take on the world!

In the spirit of uplifting and inspiring each other, we asked the wonderful women in the wider Tropic community what makes them feel most empowered. From getting enough sleep to having a side hustle or wearing a bold red lip, we’ve turned their answers into a feel-good guide to female empowerment. Not just for International Women’s Day, but for life!

1. Get some Z’s.

“When I’ve had a good night’s sleep, I have enough energy to do all the things I love. That’s really empowering for me.” Joanne, Teacher, Tropic Customer.

Simple but life affirming, a good night’s sleep has the power to set you up for success in every aspect of your life. Rest is the founding pillar of self-care and when your batteries are fully charged, you have enough energy to show up for yourself, stand firm on your boundaries, and fill your free time with activities that light your fire.

At Tropic, we’re such believers in the benefits of sleep that we developed an entire range of products to help you drift off into the land of nod! If you’re struggling to switch off your busy brain and slink away into sweet, refreshing dreams, we recommend a spritz of our So Sleepy Pillow Mist before you go to bed at night. You’ll wake up with enough energy to seize the day and show the world what you’ve got.

2. Own your glow.

“I feel empowered when my skin is glow-y and clear. I feel like I can go out the house smiling, look everyone in the eye, and feel proud to be me.” Emily, Waitress, Clear Skies Lover

There’s nothing like the confidence that comes with clear, sparkling skin. But there’s also a magic feeling of empowerment that simply comes from knowing how to look after your complexion, finding transformative products for your needs, protecting yourself against skin damage, and making time for self-care moments at the beginning and end of each day.

In a world of never-ending beauty jargon and sales spin, Tropic tries to silence the noise and help you understand the science behind each step in your skincare routine. That’s why we created our Glow Academy series, so you can take your glow into your own hands. If you’re at the beginning of your journey and want to empower yourself with some tailor-made knowledge, start with our Skincare Routine Finder. You’ll receive personalised insights and recommendations to push your beauty confidence to the next level.

3. Do it for you.

“The empowerment I feel from running my own business is second to none. I work really hard on my business for me, and I gather real strength from that. We are all self-employed and we rise by lifting others.” Jennifer, Tropic Ambassador Senior Leader

Not even fifty years ago, women were unable to open bank accounts in their own names. With marginalised voices and limited opportunities, we were beholden to other people’s ideas on the way we should live our lives.

Today, taking ownership of your future is one of the most empowering acts we can think of. Whether that means embarking on a side hustle, changing careers, going back into education, becoming a full-time mum, starting a creative hobby, learning a new sport, or dropping everything to become a travelling solo yogi – you should do whatever floats your boat. Life throws many challenges and roadblocks our way and making space for our personal goals and dreams (no matter how small) at every opportunity makes us feel strong, confident, and incredibly empowered. Why not take five minutes today to think about a passion project you could set for yourself this year? Meet us back here next International Women’s Day and tell us all about your journey!

Our Ambassadors and Tropic HQ team members often tell us how empowering it is to be surrounded by other passionate, likeminded women in their day-to-day lives, too. Never forget the importance of lifting each other up, celebrating each other's milestones and cheering each other on – no matter how different our dreams are, we always rise together.

4. Say it out loud!

“When I’m wearing a bold red lip, I just feel fab.” Sarah, Account Manager, Kiss Me Quick Coveter

There are no two ways about it, a bold red lip will always take a low, self-effacing mood and turn it into a dazzling diva moment. But did you know that this universal confidence booster is steeped in iconic women’s history? Over one hundred years ago, the Suffragettes made red lipstick part of their freedom fighting uniform, with the popping colour acting as a strong but silent indicator of their daring defiance against the status quo.

In 2022, our modern-day red lip muse is US congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who says that ‘the key to beauty is an inside job, but a little red lipstick can’t hurt.’ She’s also inspired us to mix makeup confidence with positive affirmations, reminding her millions of Instagram followers that our own voices can empower us too, simply by looking in the mirror and saying out loud: ‘I’m the bomb!’

If you feel timid about trying a red lip, today is your day! Our Bold Lip Makeup Looks will empower you with step-by-step tutorials from the UK’s best makeup artists. Plus, each fool-proof guide will suggest palette shades for your skin tone, so you can truly own your look and show up as the unique, powerful, invincible woman you are. Go, you!
