SKINCARE PRODUCTS TO TAKE SKIING

Give your skin a fighting chance on the slopes with these skincare winter wonders.

The majestic peaks, crisp air, and quiet snowfall – taking a ski break can do wonders for the body and soul, but the same can't always be said for our complexions. From whipping winds to plummeting temperatures, our skin takes a real hit when we head for the slopes, making protection paramount. In fact, when temperatures dip below 46° Fahrenheit (8° Celsius), the skin’s natural protective barrier becomes thinner, leaving our visage vulnerable and more prone to irritation and dryness. Throw in heightened UV levels and depleted oxygen, and you have a beauty SOS on your hands.

Luckily, we've put together a natural skincare survival kit that will ensure even the most seasoned snow bunnies keep their glow.

The Sun

You wouldn't head to the beach without your trusty SPF, so don't let the icy conditions fool you. According to the World Health Organisation, with every 3,000 feet increase in altitude, UV light levels go up by 10-12 per cent. Which means leaving your sunscreen at home is not an option! Plus, fresh snow can reflect up to 80 per cent of the sun’s UV rays, often leading to some very unsightly (not to mention damaging) sunburn.

Our Sun Day Facial UV Defence Sunscreen is the best natural sunscreen for skiing, whatever your skin type. Water-resistant, SPF50 and non-greasy, Sun Day contains sweet-smelling hibiscus and banana flower extract, which help to soothe any pre-existing sun damage. Hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin, while prebiotics provide a balanced environment for your skin to flourish and stay healthy. The lightweight texture makes an ideal base for your makeup (without the chalky finish), acting as invisible UV protection as you glide down the mountainside.

The Wind

That cool alpine breeze is a tonic for the stressed, the tired, or, ahem, the hungover... but it can also bring a myriad of skin woes. When you’re whipping down a black diamond, windburn can lead to sore, cracked skin, redness, and a compromised skin barrier which results in a sluggish cell turnover. Give your sensitive skin a fighting chance by cocooning it in a thick layer of hydration-sealing ingredients like shea butter and jojoba oil.

Our Skin Dream Age-Defying Firming Cream Concentrate ticks all the right boxes, sealing up any cracks in your skin barrier with shea nilotica and murumuru butters, while olive squalane and oat oils provide oodles of nourishment for a strong protective layer. A rich yet lightweight formula, Skin Dream also includes clinically proven plant extracts that perform like retinol – prompting the skin into repairing itself, kick-starting cell turnover, and keeping your complexion plump and hydrated. The perfect rescue remedy for windburn.

The Altitude

At very high altitudes of 14,000+ feet, we experience extra stress hormones and a reduced ability to deliver oxygen to skin tissue – making it even harder for the skin to heal and retain moisture. When humidity and oxygen levels decrease, our skin is more likely to feel dry, flaky, and more sensitive, giving bacteria the opportunity to strike.

As well as drinking a lot more water to maintain moisture levels in the body (and skin), layering up our skincare can help counteract the effects of the drier air. Begin with products that are dense in hydration, such as Rainforest Dew Hydration Serum – which contains hyaluronic acid (a humectant that pulls moisture from the air and can hold 1,000 times its weight in water). Then, follow up with a nourishing oil or cream. Skin Dream or Skin Feast are both ideal candidates for this, ensuring the skin locks in as much moisture as possible and stays soft from the first run until the last.

Finally, don't forget your eyes and lips! As the skin is considerably thinner on both, they're more prone to dryness, cracking, and even eczema in the colder temperatures. Our eyes are particularly vulnerable, as the harsh winds can cause them to water which irritates the delicate skin. Line your ski jacket pocket with protective balaclavas, eye goggles, and our Lip Love Nourishing Lip Balm. And when you return to the chalet, pop on your Eye Dream Age-Defying Overnight Butterbalm. This eye-care hero works overtime to nourish and strengthen the protective layer around your precious peepers.

The Aprés Ski

Warming up by the fire with a hot chocolate, taking a break with some fondue or treating yourself to a little Bombardino after a hard day on the slopes is all part of the fun. But combined with the aforementioned weather conditions, excess salt, sugar, and alcohol can have a profound effect on our complexion. Focusing on soothing, antioxidant-rich ingredients in your skincare can help your visage deal with the aftermath. Our Deep Hydration Soothing Cooling Mask is packed with restorative ingredients, like anti-inflammatory chamomile allantoin, nutritious super berries and elasticity-boosting resurrection flower – your secret weapon against lacklustre, dry skin.

Lighten The Load

Keep your skin happy and your suitcase light with our exclusive Skincare Discovery Kit with Mini Tamanu Balm. Featuring our top hydrating and soothing skincare bestsellers, these downsized heroes carry out all the essential maintenance work your skin needs after a day on the powder. We’ve also included our rescue remedy – Tamanu Balm – a must-pack, multi-use essential which can be used on dry elbows, sore lips and even on weary limbs.
