HOW TO UPCYCLE YOUR EMPTY TROPIC PACKAGING
The festive season is often a time for overconsumption and excess. From luxurious food, to dazzling decorations, and extravagant gifts, going overboard is a seasonal tradition.
Although it’s the most wonderful time of the year for the Christmas-lovers amongst us, the same sadly can’t be said for the environment. A staggering 120 billion units of packaging are produced annually by the global cosmetics industry – and the holiday season certainly plays its part (Zero Waste, 2021). Plus, with 40 per cent of Brits admitting that they don’t regularly recycle their bathroom waste, our planet is paying the price.
Worse still, any cosmetic gifts that we do receive are usually wrapped in copious amounts of wrapping paper, fastened with fancy ribbons and parcelled up in a plastic and paper gift bag. No matter how many times we remind friends and family that we’d be happy with some brown paper or an old newspaper, gift-givers just can’t seem to get enough of O.T.T. wrapping and glitter galore.
If you’re lucky enough to receive some Tropic treats this Christmas, know that we’ve done everything we can to make our packaging as recyclable, reusable and refillable as possible. But the sustainability doesn’t have to stop there! Why not add some Tropic-al style to your home by upcycling your empties? Here’s a rundown of our favourite upcycling ideas – tried and tested by the Tropic team, of course!
Bag a bookmark
If you haven’t seen this year’s gorgeously designed festive collections, where have you been? Crafted by some of the world’s top designers, these limited edition sets are real masterpieces. It would be criminal to throw such sublime packaging away, so why not try transforming it into a beautiful bookmark? Or, pass on the love by cutting the cardboard into extra special gift tags.
Jazz up your jars
Nobody likes running out of Body Smooth Refreshing Polish – but it’s not all bad news. Swill out the jar to create the perfect plant pot for your favourite creeper or succulent.
Not green-fingered? Not to worry! These jars add rustic charm to homemade jams or chutneys, make nifty pen pots, or are ideal for overnight oats on the go!
All bottled up
Doubling up as mini vases for all your house plant offcuts, empty serum bottles are bright additions to any room. Plus, you can use the glass pipette to water your plants with pinpoint precision. You’ll have a propagation station in no time!
For a home that smells as good as it looks, put your favourite diffuser sticks into the empty bottles. Sustainable, stylish and sublimely scented – thank us later.
All out of balm? Remain calm. Transform your home into a cosy sanctuary by popping a tea light into the empty pots – they’ll light up any room!
Or, if you’re guilty of abandoning the day’s jewellery and hair grips randomly before bed each night (only to wake up and forget where they are) use these pots to keep everything in one place. Organised? We like to think so.
We can’t wait to see all your upcycling projects. Don't forget to share your snaps with us using #LOVETROPIC for a chance to be featured on our socials!
